Degassing of a VCM Storage Sphere

A 2,500 m³ vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) storage sphere required degassing to enable safe internal maintenance, with a target vapor concentration below 50 ppm.

Client: BASF

Duration: 72 hours

Location: Antwerp, Belgium

Results: Zero environmental emissions

The Challenge

A 2,500 m³ vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) storage sphere required degassing to enable safe internal maintenance, with a target vapor concentration below 50 ppm.

Equipment Deployed

AQ Degassing deployed a mobile cryogenic condensation unit using liquid nitrogen (−155°C) to recover VCM vapors efficiently.
The operation included inerting, pressure testing, and reconditioning of the sphere to ensure full safety and operational integrity.

Results Achieved

  • 13,630 liters of liquid VCM recovered, 100% reusable.
  • Final vapor concentration: 16 ppm (well below the 50 ppm target).
  • Operation completed in 40 hours with zero incidents.
  • Full compliance achieved and downtime minimized.
